The Commodity Distribution program disbursed surplus food, donated or purchased, to needy families in Orleans and surrounding parishes and also ran a five-cents a quart milk program. Toward the end of the WPA era, the program was replaced in Orleans Parish by "food stamps" or "tickets," which could be redeemed for goods in local stores. This program also distributed clothing and assisted in flood relief elsewhere in the state. In one month in 1936, Louisiana families received received 1,229,748 pounds of food and 24,174 pieces of wearing apparel.
