African Americans in New Orleans: Learning

The 1914 Woods Directory, being a colored business, professional and trades directory of New Orleans, La. included advertisements for Leland, Guillaume College (located in the Pythian Temple), and the Crescent Hairdressing College (at 2013-15 Dryades Street) in addition to this one for New Orleans University. That institution began in 1873 as the Union Normal School. In 1930 it merged with Straight University to form Dillard University. The St. Charles Avenue property subsequently became the location for Gilbert Academy, a private school for African American boys.
